Frequently Asked Questions

Is Tail Tracker an animal shelter?

No, Tail Tracker is merely a website that enables you to search for all the animals that are available for adoption from the various shelters and animal rescues around South Africa.

If I find the perfect pet, how do I go about adopting it?

You need to get in touch with the shelter. All shelters have their own adoption procedures and policies.

How long will it take for my new pet to settle in?

Remember the Rule of 3. It takes 3 days for your new pet to decompress; 3 weeks to start to learn about their new environment, to learn your routine and what they are, and are not, allowed to do; and 3 months to feel like they are at home. Be patient with them, everything in your home is new and different to them, they will adjust.

What do I need to buy for my new pet?

The most vital basics that you will need to buy is food, a bowl for food and a bowl for water, a harness and a leash and maybe a few toys.

What food should I feed my new pet?

The choice of food is based on your personal preference and budget, we advise speaking to your vet about which food they recommend. It is also advisable to speak to the shelter about what food they were feeding your pet. You may consider buying a small bag of the food the shelter was feeding your pet and slowly introducing the new food of your choice (mixing it into the food they are used to). This will prevent your new pet from getting an upset stomach from sudden change in diet.

Should I let my new pet sleep inside?

Absolutely yes! We believe pets are members of the family and should sleep inside with the family, particularly in winter. Don’t be fooled, animals feel the cold too.

Can I donate to Tail Tracker?

Tail Tracker is a for profit company, but we are in the process of registering a non-profit organisation. We will let you know when we are allowed to accept donations from the public.
